Should I enroll in a Yoga teacher training course? (Hint: You don’t have to want to teach!)

Does this sound like you:

  • Should I enroll in a Yoga teacher training course?
  • How do I know if I’m ready?
  • What if I don’t want to teach?

We’re asked those questions all the time at The Floating Lotus. If you’re asking them, too, it might be time to consider signing up. Here are six of our most frequently asked questions about teaching and teacher training:

Why do students enroll in Yoga teacher training?

The most common reason for enrolling in a teacher training program is to deepen your practice. If you want to gain a better understanding of poses, the history of Yoga practice and the philosophical components, this program is for you.

What is the course like?

The Floating Lotus’s Yoga Alliance-certified teacher training program takes place one weekend per month, 18 hours each weekend, for 10 weeks, plus 20 hours of Yoga class attendance on your own.

Our course is a balance of the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of Yoga. You’ll get to know about your classmates, discover the history of Yoga and learn about asanas.

The final exam, administered on the last weekend of the course, is an open-book test, with your personal notes allowed.

How do I know if I’m ready for this?

You don’t have to be familiar with the philosophy and terminology. If you’re curious about the deeper aspects of Yoga, you have developed a passion for Yoga, or you love to learn, you’re ready!

You don’t have to wonder if it’s the right time. If you want to meet a group of like-minded people and initiate a change in your life, you’re ready!

You don’t have to already have mastered all the poses. If you follow your body and listen to your breath, you’re ready!

Who teaches Yoga?

Most Yoga instructors teach one or two classes a week as a second job.

What kinds of full-time jobs do they do? Everything! We have encountered Yoga teachers who are doctors, nurses, school teachers, artists, massage therapists, aestheticians, office workers, waitstaff … just to name a few!

Why should I teach?

It’s a great way to make a little extra money doing something you love!

What if I don’t want to teach?

Many students who enroll in our program have no desire to teach, and sign up simply to learn more about yoga, deepen their practice and take on a new physical challenge. And, you might find out you are actually good at teaching! You never know until you try.
